School Spies on Students Via Webcam

This is probably one of the more outrageous stories I’ve heard in a while. A school in Phildalphia that issues laptops to its students was using said laptop’s webcams to spy on students in their homes. Big brother much?

One of the students got in trouble for ‘inappropriate behaviour at home’ and the school produced webcam images as evidence. The student and his family are now filing a lawsuit which is expected to quickly become a class action suit.

Please Rob Me Raises Awareness on GEO Tweeting

An article on TechCrunch raised my interest in a new website – Please Rob Me – which is definitely raising awareness about location based Tweeting. The site is aggregating Tweets made by location based services such as Foursquare. This raises interesting issues about privacy on the net. Just a couple of years ago it would be unheard of to broadcast to the world your every move and location, although now it seems common place.

New WordPress Site by Nicasio: Dr. Goschi

Over at Nicasio we just launched our latest custom WordPress project. This project was for Dr. Barbara Goschi out of Chicago, IL.

I won’t duplicate the content from the Nicasio blog, but I will say there were some minor challenges on this blog including multiple, custom designed, widgetized sidebars along with a custom Ask a Question process tied into the Shopp plugin.

Google Postpones Nexus One China Launch

Google has postponed their Chinese launch of the popular Nexus One phone in China. One would assume this is due to their recent disagreements with the Chinese government over internet censorship.

The big question – Is Google willing to forgo the potentially billions of dollars in revenue, take a stand, and pull out of China COMPLETELY until the Chinese government changes it’s stance on censorship?

Android App Review: Google Sky Maps

One of the coolest Android Apps I’ve found since first getting on the Android bandwagon has to be Google Skymaps. This cool app gets your GPS or Cell Tower location and loads up a map of everything in the sky you could ever want to see. Hold your phone up to the sky and see the names and locations of all things astronomical right where they actually are. Want to find something in particular? Search for it and the app will show you an arrow on where to point your phone to find it. The price is also right at: $0.00.

Android App Review: Seesmic (Twitter Client)

As a Twitter junkie (well all social networking really), it’s essential that I am have full control over my multiple Twitter accounts on the go. My choice for a Twitter client on the Android platform is currently Seesmic. The app is clean, quick, intuitive, nice looking, and allows you to easily control multiple accounts with one program. One thing the app is lacking is widget showing your Twitter feed, similar to what Twitroid had.

Cross Browser Compatibility

Well the site is looking good (as good as it can with my limited design skills) on all modern browsers.

Of course it looks much better on Web Kit based browsers (Safari and Chrome), and Firefox since I am using quite a bit of CSS3, but it comes out OK on the IE browsers too. Although I didn’t check it in IE6. I might just make the site inaccessible for IE6 users ;)

Site Design

This site is mainly meant to be more about the content and my wanting to play around with the WordPress 3.0 Alpha than anything else. I slightly played around with skinning the new default WordPress theme – Twenty Ten. A designer I am not (as you can tell), but I can say from a developer’s standpoint the default theme is actually pretty easy to work with. I doubt it will be replacing my normal frameworks anytime soon, but  it’s definitely a step up from the old default theme.

Facebook Releases HipHop for PHP

Chances are if you’re a PHP developer you’ve already heard about Facebook’s release of HipHop for PHP.

If you’re not a PHP programmer you can learn more Here, but the general concept is converting memory heavy PHP code to lighter C++ code to allow sites (like Facebook) to serve up billions of page views with far less strain on their servers.

All in all, very cool.
